The Perfect PortfolioSubmitted by Financial Planning Solutions, LLC on August 30th, 2018
Logically, because we are a financial planning and investment firm, it would be logical for you to think this blog post would be about investments. What secret mix of different investments would ensure the best return given our personal risk tolerance and time frame?
Here at FPS, we do this every day.
Today, I'd like to address another type of Perfect Portfolio. Readers of our weekly newsletter know that we try to incorporate articles and videos to help promote a healthier life for our readers. Why do we do this? Simply, because we care about all of you and not just your investments.
Those of you that know me know I am passionate about health. Is it easy to live a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising regularly?
No, it is not. Not because healthy food is not available but rather, here in the U.S we are inundated and bombarded on a daily basis with an abundance of bad unhealthy food options.
So, what works for me (unless I'm on vacation and there are four ice cream stores in a three block area) is to eat a plant based diet. That way, if my stomach is pretty full with the good stuff, there is less chance I'm tempted to eat poorly. Shout out to my sister Eileen who has got me eating a trough of salad every day.
Dr. Joel Fuhrman is one of my go to sources for evidence based research on these topics. (Dr. Michael Greger is another).
Dr. Fuhrman talks of incorporating G.B.O.M.B.S in your diet every day. This acronym stands for Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds. This would be a good start to a Perfect Portfolio of food.
We all need to eat More Greens, Beans, Nuts and Seeds. Repeat after me…. Greens, Beans, some Nuts and Seeds. Greens, Beans, some Nuts and Seeds. Greens, Beans, some Nuts and Seeds.
By the way, this doesn't mean you can only eat salad or never have a dessert if you want to. It means that you want your diet to consist of 95% really good stuff and 5% of not so good. Just like in an investment portfolio, it is best to "fill up" on the more fundamental and diversified investments and if you so desire, just incorporate a very small percentage to the less healthy stuff. i.e. a hot stock tip.*
The link below is a talk Dr. Fuhrman put on that was sponsored by Hippocrates Health Institute. It is over an hour but worth watching. It's called "We can win the war on cancer" Press the Ctrl key as you click. A clip is also in this week's newsletter.
